Jamel Shabazz,“Embracing the Feeling. Flatbush, Brooklyn,” 1982.

The history of photography has not been told resoundingly enough with works by people of color.  There are noble efforts to remedy that, but it will be a process.  Further, images in the popular culture — editorial, commercial, even personal ones — are overlooked in the histories.  Attention must be paid.

Jameel Shazz is a long time street photographer, working within the black community in Brooklyn and the other NYC boroughs.

The success of an image the boys in Flatbush has to do with its sense of immediacy and joy.  This pack of young men looks like a many limbed hydra grasping life in the city.  The color is vibrant as is the scene itself.  The light reflected on the tiles buoys it.  The moment is transcndeant and blissfully timeless.

Work like this can take pride of place in the histories.
