Herman Costa, “Untitled (Balls)”, 1980s?
Herman Costa (1944-2019) was my idea of a downtown artist, even though he lived on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. He made the most amazing compositions using balky, bulky PhotoBooth machines in the 1970s and 80s. He would go to the fabled Playland in Times Square with rolls of quarters and fabric and props and make art. He was a textile designer by day and magician at night.
He could stage and manage mind-blowing dramatic tableaux of assembled uncut strips with elaborate preplanning and some fast moving on his part.
Herman Costa, “Self-Portrait as Matisse in Morocco”, 1992
He understood the infinity of the square. He was my underground superstar, and he had balls.
